ST. SOPHIA This ancient basilica, built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century is the most famous landmark and one of the most famous architectural marvels of all time. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Known as the jewel of Constantinople and Greek-Orthodox Church it has heavily influenced the architecture of Istanbul thereafter.
THE BLUE MOSQUE Known as Sultanahmet in the rest of the Muslim world sits across from St. Sophia. It was built in the 16th century with the aim of matching the magnificence of St Sophia. It is named BLUE MOSQUE because of its handpainted blue tiles that cover the interior of the mosque.
THE HIPPODROME Ancient Hippodrome, the scene of horse races, with the four famous monuments; the Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column, the Column of Constantine and the German Fountain used to be the center of social life in Constantinople.
THE GRAND BAZAAR Is the oldest ‘shopping mall’ known to man with its labyrinth of streets and passages are more then 4,000 shops. Each trade having its own area: the goldsmiths’ street, the carpet sellers, Turkish arts and crafts, handpainted ceramics, copperware, brassware and trays, water ewers, onyx-ware and mso much more.
